Explore more than 2000 years of history of the Roman Coast by means of two unique, extraordinary, tours. From archeology to the modern architecture of the “Gate of Rome on the Mediterranean”.

The territory of the Roman Coast has been inhabited since ancient times.

Ostia was the first harbor of Rome at the mouth (= hostium) of the river Tiber. At the time of the Fall of the Western Roman Empire, Ostia was gradually abandoned and experienced only a brief moment of rebirth at the time of Pope Julius II (between the 15th and the 16th cent.). The disastrous 1557 flood diverted the river bed, creating a huge swamp. Once again the Tiber determined the history of this area that has been made habitable again only thanks to the heroic reclamation of the land made by a group of laborers coming from Ravenna in the late 19th century.

Ostia Lido was thus founded ex-novo in the 20th century and this makes it an almost unique case in the Italian urban landscape. The birth of the “marine” neighborhood of Rome makes it possible to analyze the transition from a late-19th cent. “garden-city” model towards the ideas of young architects inspired by European rationalism. This tour will therefore retrace 2000 years of history of the “Gate of Rome on the Mediterranean.”

The price does NOT inlcude the ticket to the archeological excavations of Ostia Antica.
